The home offers shelter and protection to every person living in it; therefore, it should be a place where one can feel safe and comfortable. This is the reason why break-ins affect people so negatively, in more ways than just having lost a few items or a loss of privacy. There are quite a few things that you can do to make your home more secure; after all, a dash of paranoia is better than feeling violated.

1. Grills and Gates

These are your first line of defense, and should be your first priority. Reinforce your doors and windows, and make sure that these are sturdy by themselves, along with your jambs, sills, and outer walls. After all, if your door is stronger than what it is attached to, a determined intruder might find a way to go through that instead.

2. Locks

You can go space-age and install a biometric lock on your home, but sometimes a deadbolt does the job well enough. As long as you remember to use the lock every time necessary, that is the most important thing.

3. Alarms and Sensors

There are a lot of types of alarms and sensors, like motion detectors and heat sensors, or even the good old family dog. But remember that these measures will only make you aware that there is someone in your premises, not who they are, what they want, and what they are capable of doing. When that fight or flight moment comes, it is always safer to flee and call the authorities.

4. Cameras

There are very few people who do not venture far from their domain, so put a camera to keep an eye on things while you are out. It may not stop the trespassers, but you will at least know who they are. A few well-placed signs that your house is protected by surveillance cameras sounds like a good idea but that might prick their interest to look for it.

5. Keep the Keys

After you have put in all those security features, you would not want to leave keys lying around for anyone to find, so do not put these under those fake rocks or in the flowerpot. If you have the tendency to lose keys, buy a key ring that attaches to something bigger like your purse or your belt. Do not put your name and address with your keys, and if the keys are lost, it is best for those to stay lost.

These tips can help keep your house safe, but ultimately, the best security measure is still you. Always keep your eyes open for anything that is out of the ordinary, such as a strange vehicle or an unfamiliar face in your neighbourhood. Also, do try to break away from routines and schedules that they can set their clock to, because if they can predict what you will be doing, they can plan their entry easily.
