Most people want to decorate using Feng Shui because they have heard so much about the benefits of doing so.

The use of Feng Shui in decor design can harmonise your environment; this is not some kind of mystical magic in placing your furniture, it is simply the placement of furnishings and the use of colors and design elements that allow their characteristics to work harmoniously.

This allows the natural qualities to effectively bring about good energy to positively affect things such as luck, success, love and prosperity. It’s no secret that color can affect the way we feel, but the placement of objects can also affect our energies in certain areas as well.

Even though the art of Feng Shui may take years to fully understand all its intricacies and complexities profoundly, you can take some of the basic principles and implement them to gain a better balance of harmony in your environment.

The most important basic thing you can do to immediately improve the environment is to de-clutter and clean your area. It matters not how perfectly organised and aligned your furnishings are according to the principles of Feng Shui, if you have clutter and mess then you are doing yourself a disservice by not allowing the energy to work in your favour. One great way to de-clutter a room and your life is to get rid of everything that you have not used in a year or more. Literally remove it; you can place it in a storage area and try to sell it if you want to, but it should not be welcomed back into your space.

Organise your items and clear everything of dust that may have accumulated. Clean your windows, too; unclean windows can affect the natural lighting of a room and make it seem drab and dreary. If you want good energy, then fill it with energy such as the light from the sun.

You do not need to completely revamp your space and move everything around; this is a misconception of Feng Shui which puts most people off trying out of a fear of doing it ‘wrong’. All you really need to do is check the layout of your room, walk around and make sure there are no obstacles from the door opening to the farthest corner of the room. If there are any difficulties in making your way into any area of the room you may need to move around some furnishings to make it flow better. You should not block any passageways and you should have a comfortable feeling when you’ve moved your furniture; with these basic concepts you can easily place your furniture for harmony and energy benefits.

When you finally have your room cleaned and your furniture placed you get to decorate it and make it your own personal style. There are many tips in Feng Shui design that you can use for decorating your home correctly and the most important one says that you should like whatever it is that you do.

If you don’t feel absolutely comfortable with a design element, a piece of artwork or any kind of decorative material then it should not be in your room. Also remember that you de-cluttered the room for a reason and you should not overdo things when redecorating it. Clutter will only stifle the energies and harmonies in the room.
