Build Your Own Wind Power Generator

If you want to have a wind power system at home to get some electricity from this natural source, then you would need help from wind power turbines – and luckily you will get them in the market. But if you are someone who wants to build-it-yourself, the good news is, you can also create your own wind generator power system at home.

However to have home built turbines, you will need to have a generator and of course blades that can turn when there is some wind, batteries, an electronic control system that will be able to switch the power that is generated to a workable format. Plus, of course, you will need to know how to use all of the above to create your power at home.

The first things that you will need are motors that will work when connected to power – they can also work when it is connected to the source of wind power. But you will need to ensure that the motor is spinning at a specified rated rpm because otherwise, the power generated might not be enough. Thus, you will need to be careful when you are selecting the type of motor that you need for this purpose.

The next things you need to concentrate on for making your home built wind generator are the blades. Here there are two options for you – you can either make the blades from wood or use a 6 inch ABS pipe – but do ensure that they are at least 24 inches long. Now if you cut this into 4 pieces, you will get 4 blades. But you should use just 3 of them and keep the fourth one as spare when any of the other blades get damaged.

But the blades need to be attached somewhere and so, you will need a hub. You can find such a hub easily at the store close to your home. And once you have found your hub, you can then easily attach the blades to it and then fix the assembly to the motor’s shaft.

Once you have completed doing this, you will then need to concentrate on creating the mounting frame for the turbine to which the turbine can be strapped using some wood that measures 2 inch x 4 inch. You should cut a piece from the heavy sheet aluminum to create a tail for the turbine because this tail will keep the turbine working in the wind. The 4 inch diameter PVC pipe will protect your gadget from the ravages of nature. The pipe must have two parts – the first part will offer protection from rain, snow and slit and the second one can be kept as a reserve.

You are now almost done with your home built generator power and at this phase what you need is a wind turbine charge controller. This will help you monitor the voltage of the battery(s) – if the battery is fully charged, then power from the turbine will be sent to a secondary load and if charge is needed, then the turbine will send power to the batteries for recharging. Do keep in mind that of you end up overcharging, then you may end up causing damage to the batteries cell. Do not worry, these common electronic items are readily available and so you should find them easily.

Once the unit is ready to start working, you will need to need the tower where it should be put up. Get started with a 10 foot long 1.25 inch conduit and some guy ropes. The rope will work as the conduit for the wooden stakes that has to be driven to the ground. And the turnbuckles at the lower side of the guy ropes will let you plumb the tower. All you now need to do is raise or lower the tower as the case may be by releasing the line from the stake that has a pivot attached at the base.

You are almost set to start working – all you need now is some wind. When you are making the generator at home, you can get the creative satisfaction, and of course, you will also be able to save some money.

Following the steps that are mentioned here, you can get your home built generator power system up and working quickly. But it is best that you seek help from a manual because you will need to know where in your home it will work best, how you can install it, where to get the parts from and also where to get the batteries from free, information on completing the wiring and also the safety precautions that need to be followed. Wind power has tremendous financial as well as ecological benefits – this manual will show you how to get a system for yourself and benefit from this.
