Bunk beds have been a staple of bedroom furniture for generations. Bunk beds of all kinds can be found in dormitories, military barracks and ships. Creating more sleeping space has always been one the advantages of the ubiquitous bunk bed.
For families with kids who share a bedroom, a bunk bed can add space to the child’s room. The basic design of the bunk bed has not changed much over the years, two beds or more beds, one atop another. Bunk bed designers have created fun and practical bunk beds that are perfect for any decorating theme.
More than just a place to sleep, a bunk bed can be a child’s own space. Whether for a multi-child household or giving overnight guest a comfortable place to sleep, the bunk is a versatile piece of bedroom furniture. Bunk beds offer some definite advantages to growing families.
Designers have created many variations of the traditional bunk bed design of one bed atop another. A popular variation is the twin over full bunk bed. The twin bed is on top and full sized bed is on the bottom and there are two different versions of the twin over bed. In one popular variation, the bottom, full sized bunk is perpendicular to the top bunk. Turning the bottom bunk at an angle creates room for drawer storage.
Another interesting design twist combines a traditional twin size bunk and a pull out trundle or drawer bed on the bottom. The space in between can be used as a desk or to accommodate more drawer space. The lower drawer bed remains closed until it is needed. Fitting efficiently into a corner, a corner bunk may have as many as three twin size beds.
With room left over for a student’s desk, drawers and other storage, a corner bunk provides maximum sleeping space while taking up a fraction of the space needed for three beds.
Another popular type of bunk bed is the futon bunk. The twin bunk on the top is combined with a full size futon couch on the bottom. The futon provides seating space during the day which can be quickly converted to a comfortable sleeping space.
In addition to space considerations, selecting the right bunk bed for children must also take safety into account. Most modern bunk bed designs feature safety rails that are attached to the frame and not easily removed. If the bunk bed is intended for use by children, never remove or modify the safety rails.
Avoid the mistake of buying a mattress that is too thick for the bed. The height of many pillow top or plush top mattresses, often 12 inches or more, may exceed the height of the safety rails. Better to use a standard mattress, which usually ranges in from eight to ten inches in height.
