When a home has been damaged with smoke, no matter what the reason, it is going to smell really bad and be stained to some extent. One of the most common reasons that homes can have smoke damage without there ever having been a real fire is because of smoking in the home. When one or more people smoke cigarettes, pipes or cigars in a house, not only does it smell, but it also leaves a sticky tar residue on almost every surface. The stink will penetrate in cracks where it can even smell up things like clothes hanging in closets and hiding in drawers, but the insulation in the walls as well.

There are ways to get these smells and sticky residue removed, but it will require a lot of elbow grease on either your part or the people that you hire to do the cleaning for you. Just scrubbing down the walls and ceilings can help a lot, but actually you will have to go even further than that. If you have carpets in the home, they too will need cleaning and deodorizing. Your upholstered furniture, curtains, draperies, and blinds will need to be cleaned too.

When it comes to the insulation in your walls, there really is not a lot that you can do about that except ask a professional. In most cases tearing out the walls to install new insulation might be a little over the top. The main objective is to clean surface areas and materials inside the home. Of course, if your home had a fire that really left that acrid smoke stench, some insulation replacement might be necessary.

What is most important of all is that after you have been to all of the trouble of cleaning your home overall and getting the smell out as much as you can, is to make sure that you do not allow smoking inside the home anymore. You can go outside or insist that others do to smoke.

There is a product called an electric cigarette available that does not produce real smoke. It produces no smell and leaves no residue. If you find it too difficult to not be able to smoke inside the home, you might consider switching to an electric cigarette just so your home will not get that stinky smoke smell again and have a sticky smoke and tar residue all over your surfaces and belongings again. Not only will this product be better for your home, but it just might be better for you as well.
