When you are deciding on the decor of a room it is important to understand fully how certain colors will affect your moods in the room. You must first know what mood or tone you wish to set when you walk into a space.

Are you designing a bedroom? Do you want it to be a tranquil place to rest and rejuvenate in the sleeping hours or do you want to create a romantic hideaway for just the two of you? If you are designing an office space, do you want an area that will be conducive to inspiring creativity, or do you want a place where you get straight to business?

The color green is a cool tone that is associated with the natural and the outdoors. You can have a sense of nature and vegetation within you space to enhance the feelings of tranquility and calm as well as well as having a feeling of being rejuvenated and refreshed. This is an excellent color to have in an area of your home with children who are just beginning to learn how to read.

Another cool color is blue. This color is typically associated with things like the sky, the ocean and water. You can get a feeling or serenity in areas that are decorated in shades of blue. Using this color in a bathroom decor might give it a spa-like feeling. Blue is not a good color choice for those who suffer from depression as it is also associated with sadness.

A color that is associated with majesty, royalty and wealth is purple. A home that is decorated in shades of purple can feel majestic and the color can also evoke the feeling of wisdom. Since purple is a cool color, the cooler hues of purple (with more blue than red) might evoke tranquility and calm.

Gray is a very versatile color; while not actually being a color, it is a mixture of white and black. It is very elegant and sophisticated and is one of the neutral colors. You can use it as a backdrop to make your vibrant colors pop. Gray is a very cool color, but you must be careful in its use as it is also associated with depression for some people.

Another great neutral color is white. With white you can make a smaller room appear larger than it is. It is one of the calming colors but it can also evoke a feeling of sterility and coldness. If it is used in the right doses it can add an air of sophistication to a space.

The decor of a room is better served by the cooler colors. Reds and yellows tend to make people feel agitated; they evoke frustration and irritation. Babies are more apt to cry in a room that is decorated with yellow, than the more soothing blues and greens. When choosing your decor and furnishing, pick colors that will stimulate the emotions you want to feel.
