If you have fitted, or wall to wall, carpeting, there is almost no doubt that it cost you at least a thousand dollars. Good quality carpets and area carpets or rugs are usually expensive investments, adding to your quality of life while they also add value to your home. Therefore, it’s of the utmost importance to take care of them correctly. This article will point out some general principles of spot removal for some of the most common stains and spills. Don’t forget, however, that the vast majority of good carpet maintenance practice is comprised of frequent vacuuming and cleaning, at least on a weekly basis if not more for highly trafficked areas!

First of all, attend to all carpet or rug soiling straight away. Leaving it for later could decrease your chances of successful that is, complete removal by up to 75 percent! When treating your stain, blot up any liquid and scrape up all solids possible, but be careful not to spread the stain around; work from the outside in. Make sure to blot, not scrub. To help break up a stain, strike the surface of your carpet with the flat side of a spotting brush. But if for some reason you absolutely must scrub, be sure not to use excessively abrasive actions in order to prevent damaging carpet tufts.

If you are going to use chemicals, test them in a normally hidden or obscure area first (say, underneath the bed), just to make sure it won’t discolor the surface of your carpet. When drying, you can put a thick pad of paper towels over the treated area and weigh it down with books for a period of time in order to wick up any remaining moisture. Be careful not to iron or hot-air dry your stains, as heat will help set in most stains!

Soap and water will do the trick for many stains, but sometimes you might find it necessary to apply more exotic measures, like white vinegar (diluted 1:1). Your soap should be a neutral dish washing detergent diluted 20:1 with water. A three-percentage grade Hydrogen peroxide solution can be used for bleaching when warranted. Denatured or isopropyl alcohol and a bacterial/enzyme digester round out the list of unexpected spot removal tools. The key to successful cleaning is to know your carpet. For example, many manufacturers treat their carpets with stain-resistant coatings. Know what it is, and whether you may purchase it for re-application yourself periodically. Such protective coating agents will help soils slide off your carpet easier, as well as make any professional cleaning you might have done (which, incidentally, you should, at least on an annual basis) more effective. Note that stain and soil-resistant coatings are usually to be re-applied after a thorough cleaning, too.
