There are several appliances we have in the home that use water. Some of them, like a hot water heater keep water in them all of the time and when they leak, it can be constant and cause damage a lot faster than some other water using appliances. A refrigerator that has a water dispenser and ice maker also have a water line running into them that can leak constantly. Any appliance that has hoses that leak can cause water damage if the hose is impaired in some way. But even if your hoses are all in good shape, the appliance itself can have a leak somewhere else and may only leak water when it is in use. Either way, a leaking appliance can cause damage.
When you discover that any water using appliance has a leaking pipe, hose, or the appliance itself is damaged and leaking water, you never need to let this go not repaired any longer than necessary. Sometimes you might not even notice you have an appliance leak if it is hidden underneath and is not a big leak. It could leak a small puddle when you use the appliance and then dry up before you see it. This might happen with something like your garbage disposal or dishwasher when the item is installed in a cabinet where the leak may not become visible until it causes a flood.
The bad thing about these smaller leaks that you do not see right away is that they can go on for long periods of time and when they are not detected early, they can cause mold and rotting to set in and gradually worsen. By the time you find the leak, you could already have some serious floor, wall, or cabinet damage. All three places could have been affected already. The floor might have become damaged enough that the appliance could actually be in danger of falling through the floor.
Once you have a spot that has this kind of damage, you will have to remove the appliance and find where the leaking is coming from. Is the appliance itself leaking or is it a hose or plumbing pipe? Once you figure this out you can fix the leaking pipe or hose, or have the appliance repaired if possible. Then you have to deal with the water damage it caused. This might mean just cleaning up a little mold and allowing the area to dry out if it has not been going on for long, but if it has been happening for long enough to cause rotting, that particular spot will need to be torn out and replaces. Make sure any mold is scrubbed with disinfectant. If the job is more than you can handle, call in a water damage company and you will be sure to have any problem involved, repaired correctly.
