Interior design in your personal space requires patience and lots of planning. You can simply rearrange your furniture and change the drapes, but you may want to give it more of a personal flair.

You’ll need a few things when you get started; a notebook, pencil, measuring tape, folder and some decorating magazines. Take a note of the measurements of your room in your notebook first. The next step is the fun part; without thinking about what you want your space to look like, just start cutting out pieces of furniture and other decorating elements you love from your magazines. Don’t try to match anything up, just cut. If you like a shape of a couch, you can cut it out; if you like a colour of a rug cut it out.

After that, take an assessment of the space you’re redecorating. It’s easiest to work up from the floor. Do you need some new carpeting? Perhaps you want to put in some hardwood, tile or laminate flooring? Take note of anything that must stay in the room; any permanent features, such as bookcases, that are built-in or a chandelier. You will also need to decide if you want a popcorn or smooth ceiling surface; another choice would be adding ceiling tiles. Make sure you jot down all of your ideas in your notebook.

Now you get to put all those cutouts to good use. Find a space to lay them all out (this is fun to do over a cup of coffee on your kitchen table). Open your notebook and on a blank page write the word “STYLE”. This is where you find out what your personal style is; take a look at your cutouts and notice a theme. Are you leaning more towards a modern style? Perhaps you like a beach look or a bit of French country styling? Sum it up into one word or phrase and then write that down. Pick out you most favorite pictures and circle any of the elements that caught your eye the most; in a room decorated in green, was it the curtains?

This process will inspire you at some point and you’ll know exactly what the space should look like. Make a sketch and write down a description of your vision. Sketch the various pieces of furniture and elements that make your room perfect; use coloored pencils or crayons to color your designs. You can find some colour sample cards at your local home improvement store; pick up all the colour samples that will fit into your colour scheme.

The next step is to browse before buying. With your notebook in hand, go shopping. If you go to a physical store take a camera along for pictures of furnishings, artwork and other things that might look great in your space and be sure to mark their measurements in your notebook (you wouldn’t want to overbuy and clutter the space). Be sure to pick up any samples of flooring and fabrics that are available, too. If you are shopping online you can simply print the pieces (but, you need to make sure to note your measurements).

The final steps are measuring the space where the objects you want will be placed and making a sketch of the objects to scale to make sure your placement is good. You will then go back to the stores with your credit card in hand to purchase your items. Make your flooring and ceiling changes, add your draperies and wall decor and then place your furniture.
