It is sometimes not very pleasant for a non-smoker to visit a home or business where there are cigarette smokers. It is not that non-smokers have more sensitive noses than other people, it is because stale cigarette smoke smells so bad. It will even smell bad too smokers if they have not been around it for a while and then reenter somewhere smoking has taken place. It is a lot more repulsive than smokers want to admit, but when they catch a good whiff of the odor themselves, they really can not dent the stench.

Some smokers that have other family members in the home that do not smoke have finally taken the hints and have started going outside to smoke. This might be inconvenient for the smoker, but it certainly makes living in the home a lot safer and a lot better smelling for the non-smoking residents. In some cases taking their cigarettes outside can actually help a person cut down on the number of cigarettes they smoke at home because they have to go outside or to a garage. This can be a little annoying to do at night, in the cold, or in rainy weather.

A cigarette smoker that has stopped smoking in the house will themselves begin to notice the stale, stinky odor in their home. They might wonder why it still smells when they have stopped doing it inside the home perhaps even weeks ago. The smell will linger in the home for months or more unless a serious cleaning job takes place. Cigarette smoke has a tar residue that does not just build up in the lungs. It can coat most things in the home as well. The walls, ceilings, floors, carpets, clothes in the closets, and any other belongings that are exposed to the smoke. All of these things will have to be washed down and cleaned in order to remove the tar residue and only then will the smell go away.

Once a smoker stops smoking in the home and has the thorough cleaning job completed, their home will stay fresher smelling as long as they do not start smoking inside again. Once they have to clean every wall, wall, ceiling, and floor in the home and maybe even repaint inside, it is not likely that they will want to take up their habit inside the house again. Cleaning a home to this extent can be a tough job, so it might be a good idea to hire a professional cleaning service to help out.
