Water is a precious resource, and it is, unfortunately, taken for granted far too many times. There are parts of the world where people do not even have easy access to water. You would have to travel a few miles before reaching a well or other source for clean, drinking water. In America and other industrialized nations, simply twisting the knob on the faucet will bring forth water. It is up to everyone to ensure that they do not abuse this precious resource.

What are some quick ways you can start saving water in your home? Saving water, after all, is not just good for the planet, but it’s better for your monthly budget, too. Following some of these tips can start to make a big difference on your utility bill.

In the bathroom, plenty of water is used because there are three sources where water can be used: the shower or bathtub, the toilet, and the sink. When showering, don’t take longer than you should. While a hot bubble bath can help you unwind and relieve tense and sore muscles every now and then, you should still limit the time you spend in the shower/tub. If you are one to take long showers, start decreasing the time you spend in there in 5-minute increments until you can get in and out in 5 minutes’ time. You’ll save water, save money, and give yourself extra time.

When shaving or brushing teeth, do not leave the water running. It happens more often than you might think! When using the toilet, use it only for its intended usage. This may be common sense, but you would be surprised to learn that people dump trash, tissue, dead insects, food, and even prescription medicine down the toilet.

When it comes to having a lush, green lawn, it doesn’t mean you have to water it every single day. Unless new seeds were just put in, the grass can be watered just twice a week, but make sure that you water an inch to an inch and a half deep. On hotter days, water more frequently, up to three to four times per week. Applying mulch in the garden helps to retain moisture and will require your flowers to be watered less.

When washing your dishes, again, don’t leave the water running. Scrub your dishware and utensils, and then do one final rinse-off at the very end. When you are dealing with caked-on food in a dish or pot, fill it with water and allow it to sit for a few minutes or even a few hours. It’s better than allowing the water to run on it continuously. When thawing food items, leave it out in the morning before you go to work or use the defrost feature on your microwave.

Saving water is easy once you get a hang of it. Implementing a few of these tips and taking little steps will do you and the planet more good.
