The presence of urine on furniture and household goods such as carpets and rugs is a common occurrence especially in a home with pets and young children who have not been potty trained properly.

The reasons why a pet might urinate on the furniture instead of their litter box or outside is the fact that they might not have been house broken properly or that their litter box is very dirty. A pet might also urinate in a certain area to mark their territory or as a result of stress or an underlying medical condition. Despite all these reasons, urine removal is not as difficult as many people seem to assume.

A properly trained pet will definitely make the life of their owner easier but accidents are sometimes unavoidable. One would therefore, need to learn how to remove urine from their furniture to avoid unpleasant smells and stains as a result of these accidents.

An up side to cleaning urine is that one can use products that are easily available around the home and they include baking powder, washing detergents, hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar and paper or cloth towels. The easiest way to remove urine is of course using towels. However, this is only applicable when a pet has just urinated and one was lucky to notice it before it dried.

During urine removal, one should ensure that they absorb as much of the liquid as they possibly can by pressing or treading on the affected area using the towels. This should take place form the works outside to avoid the urine from spreading further.

A brush should not be used on the furniture, rugs or carpet as this could damage the fiber of the material. However, if the urine had gone unnoticed until the odor of the urine became noticeable, a backlight is first used to determine the exact spot from which the smell is emanating if the area cannot be clearly determined just by looking.

Using a backlight not only helps to identify the urine stain but also other household stains that might have gone unnoticed. After the affected area has been determined the first step is to wet the area just a little bit to make the cleaning process easier.

A mixture of white vinegar and water in equal measure is then made and then liberally poured into the affected area. The purpose of the vinegar is to neutralize the ammonia in the urine with its acidic properties. A pet can identify the smell of ammonia therefore ammonia based products should not be used as this will only act to attract the pet back to the affected area.

When one is sure that the mixture has penetrated deep enough the area should now be left dry almost completely. Baking powder and a mixture of a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide and a normal tea spoon of detergent is then generously sprinkled and worked in to the area.

This is also allowed to dry and towels or a vacuum cleaner can be used to speed up this process. For urine removal, hydrogen peroxide is used for its ability to kill bacteria that cause odors. Removing urine is simple as long as the appropriate procedure, equipment and material is used.
