So after a good house cleaning, you finally took notice of your neglected living room. Is it looking a little drab? A little… blah? Are the bare white walls reminding you of hospital rooms and corridors? A little renovation with color can do just the trick to turn your boring living room into something hip and up-to-date.
First, decide what you want to do with your furniture. Do you want to invest in a new set? If money is tight, then consider having it upholstered for a low-cost, quick fix. This works great for those who love their comfortable, cozy couch but hate the color and old school design. It’s a little easier to work with colors when your couch is a single color. Patterns, although workable, are more difficult because its design can often take away from the rest of the room.
Are you planning on getting a new coffee table and side tables? Again, for an easy, inexpensive fix, consider re-painting them. With more people focusing on the phrase “reuse, reduce, recylce”, sanding down your tables and slathering on a new coat of paint or finish is not only eco-friendly but much cheaper than getting a new set.
Now, before you actually get around to doing any of the aforementioned tasks, make sure that you have a plan. First, think of colors that you have always wanted to experiment in. Purples and yellows? Greens and browns? Whites and blacks? Head over to your local hardware store and experiment with the different color combinations. Pair up the little blocks of paper and try to envision what they would look like in your living room. Some stores offer an interactive designing program that lets you draw out your floor plan and plug in the colors you are thinking about to give you a better idea of what the finished project would look like.
Decorations are great things to add to the room. After all, some nice polished walls, a clean couch and some tables are sometimes not enough to give it that special look and feel. For lighting, you can have a single lamp stand to light up the whole room or a couple of lamps to set atop the side tables. Next, consider the other trinkets you might want to put on your coffee table or any other furniture in the room. If you’re big on pictures, make sure the frames all match some how. They don’t need to be the same color; as long as they match, they’re okay. Wall decorations can include paintings, clocks, sconces, mirrors, or decorative plaques and other art.
