When it comes to decorating your home, there really are two ways you can go about it. You can play it safe or you can be bold.

Safe is great. That usually means going with white walls and neutral or pastel colors. White walls with a nice gray couch and a dark-colored TV stand, coffee table, and side tables can make any room look fabulous. The walls can also be a neutral color such as a light gray or a tan or khaki color. Again, wonderful colors.

But if you want to step away from the neutrals and be a little more daring, then the sky is the limit. There are so many different colors and so many things you can do to a living room that the possibilities are literally endless.

First thing’s first. You have to decide if you want to make a bold statement with just your furniture, your walls and decorations, or both. It all depends on how you feel because furniture is a little bit more permanent. You probably don’t invest in couches, sofas, armchairs, and tables all too often, so if you splurge on an eggplant purple-colored couch now, you might regret your decision later. Walls can be painted and re-painted any time so splashing on some bright, bold colors there is a bit safer. With decorations, you can go all out.

Keep in mind that although you are experimenting with color, you still have to make sure that all aspects of the room coordinate with one another. While some living rooms look gorgeous with lime-colored walls, a brown couch, and various shades of green and white decorations, other living rooms may not, and you have to make it match with the current layout of your house. A Mediterranean, Spanish-style home, for example, would not do so well with an ultra sleek, contemporary looking furniture. It would be like stepping into two different dimensions.

A failsafe way to go with colors is to stick to the color wheel. The colors that are directly across from one another on the wheel are called complementary colors, and pairing those two will usually result in a strikingly handsome room. Blue and orange, for example, are opposites and make for interesting variations. It might not sound like a match made in heaven, but you would be very surprised how well they do turn out!

Contrasting also looks great. Trying colors that are complete opposites of one another (and not just on the color wheel) can produce an awesome room. Be bold and creative. Make a statement!
