If you are remodeling a home, whether it is your kitchen or bathroom, you may want to go with the distressed look. The distressed look is great for bathroom cabinets, kitchen cabinets, and other types of furniture. If you don’t want to spend the money to purchase this type of furniture, you can also distress the furniture yourself. Here is a look at some interesting ways that you can distress the furniture yourself and some tools that can help you to do so.

Basically what you want to do when you are working to distress furniture is to work on making it look old. You want it to look worn, and you can easily do this yourself with the right tools, including some basic hand tools and even some power tools. Probably one of the easiest ways that you can distress some furniture is to use a power sander. When you sand selectively with a nice sander, you will be able to take off the new look from the furniture. The great part about using a power sander is that this will do the job fast and easily for you. Of course, this isn’t the only way that you can distress your furniture for a great look.

Another option that you can use to distress furniture is to use an ice pick or even a power drill with a very small bit to get very tiny holes into the furniture. This simulates damage from insects and wormholes to give the furniture a great look. With an ice pick simply pick in some shallow holes. If you are going to use the power drill, use the smallest bit you have, and just drill in a tiny bit. It’s probably easier if you use the drill, but the holes may not look as real as the ice pick holes.

You can bang up your furniture to give it a distressed look as well. You won’t need power tools for this easy job. Simply use a hammer and some nuts and then hit them gently to add on some bumps and dings to the surface of the furniture. This is an easy way to make the furniture look old.

You can also work on wiping paint when you paint the furniture to give it a distressed look. As you paint, remove a bit of paint between layers, which will give the furniture a nice worn look. You can also paint different layers of color as well, which will help to give the furniture a look like it has been aging for years.

These are just a few great techniques that you can use to distress furniture on your own. Whether you use power tools or other options, you will find that these simple techniques will help you to get some great looking furniture, perfect for the home improvement tasks you are working on.
