We all love to have some art in our homes, but having art that doesn’t co-exist harmoniously with our current decor can be more of an eyesore than a thing of beauty. In fact, if the artwork in question is displayed in the wrong frame it can be disturbing, rather than supporting to the rest of the room in which it hangs.
An example of the wrong art in the wrong frame, albeit an extreme example, would be to put country western prints in a heavy, gilded frame. Rather, a print of that sort looks very nice in a distressed wood frame, or even a simple oak frame. It is best to save the heavy gilt frame for a nice Victorian prints where it can accent the light, airy colours.
You wouldn’t want to put that same country western print in a room filled with floral wallpaper and lace doilies. It would look drastically out of place and would make the rest of the room look awkward rather than inviting.
The size of the art in relation to where you want to put it is also something that you must take into consideration. If you happen to have a large, empty wall in your home, it is easy to fill it with many different pieces of small art that compliment each other and can be grouped, or by using a single oversized piece of artwork. Large, empty expanses require larger pieces to make a home feel more comfortable and lived in. There are many style is which to do this, a series of photos in identical frames that relate to each other grouped in a diamond shape or even a very large landscape print in a large frame can be accommodated nicely in such an area.
If you are looking to find artwork for a smaller area, you need to think smaller. Perhaps you have a small section of wall that separates the kitchen from the dining room. Using small vintage portrait frames with black and white photos of the special people in your life, or maybe even to frame small works of needleart, can keep this from being another blank wall and creating a nice conversation piece for visitors when they arrive. Hanging one above the other, it can create the illusion of having a larger space.
The art that you choose to display is going to affect the people who look at it. They will learn more about you from the art that you display. Take care to select pieces that reflect exactly what you want them to see. If you select pieces for your home that do not reflect who you are or what you enjoy, not only will your guests find themselves slightly confused, you won’t be happy with it, either.
If you were an avid hiker, landscape prints or photos would be ideal. Perhaps you are an old movie buff, finding a few movie posters from your favourites would be best to hang in your home. Let your art speak for you and you will be more content with your interior design.
