The sun, as it shines upon the earth, emits through its rays what is known as radiant energy. This energy is comprised of electromagnetic waves. Thanks to modern science and technology, man has found ways of capturing this radiant energy, harness it through suitable means and convert it into various other useful forms of energy, mainly heat and electricity. This is known as solar power. Solar power is a fascinating subject to study. This article will throw light on some of the essential aspects of solar power.

Solar power – how does it work?

Solar power has many applications and is widely considered as an important source of alternative energy, along with other such variants as wind power and hydro power. It is worthwhile to find out more about this tremendously useful form of energy and how it can help mankind avoid a possible energy crisis in the future. Sun’s energy is derived from its rays which are essentially made up of electromagnetic waves. Of the total amount of radiation received by the earth at any given time, about 70% gets absorbed by the various landmasses, water bodies and vegetation. The remaining 30% is reflected back into space. This absorbed radiation heats the atmosphere and produces what is known as radiant heat. Solar radiation is directly responsible for about 99 percent of the usable flux of the renewable energy on earth. However, the degree to which this solar power is used and the economy involved in the process, are dependant on how efficiently the incumbent radiation is handled by existing solar power technologies.

The actual use and application of solar power is largely dictated by the kind of requirement that it aims to serve, and also, to a significant extent, by the various techniques used to trap and convert solar energy. On a broad basis, solar power can be divided into two types depending on its mode of usage – active solar power and passive solar power. Active solar power involves using sunlight directly to charge photovoltaic cells that in turn produce various other forms of energy such as heat, electricity and even mechanical energy. It is used to power pumps and fans that produce all these different forms of energy. The use of passive solar energy involves using sunlight to guide the designing of buildings with well-lit and well-circulated spaces, citing a building optimally to the sun and so on.

In both its forms, solar power offers a bunch of advantages that are too strong to deny. It’s easy to see why it is being so widely considered as such a viable alternative to conventional power generation means. Indeed, solar power has become an integral part of our lives. Today, solar power has found myriad applications in a most diverse range of fields such as the domestic front, urban planning and architecture, agriculture (including horticulture and greenhouse), solar lighting, solar heating, ventilation and cooling, disinfection and desalination, cooking, electricity and so on. The importance of solar energy in today’s world is undeniable. However, solar power also has its share of a few disadvantages.

Advantages and disadvantages of solar power

In order to better understand solar power, one must have an understanding of the various advantages and disadvantages of using the sun as a source of power. The main advantage, that actually far outweighs its disadvantages, is the clean nature of the energy produced. Solar power production does not lead to the emission of harmful gases or pollutants (like other conventional power plants) and thus, helps keep the environment green and free from pollution. Moreover, the sun is a perennial source of energy, never to get exhausted. No wonder, solar energy is finding its ways into more and more areas of our lives with every passing day. However, on the flip side, solar power needs a steady and consistent supply of strong sunlight in order to be really effective. And that’s something which is not always obtainable. Nonetheless, research is continuing in this field to help overcome these shortcomings and make solar power a viable and dependable source of power the world over.

Solar power is the ideal choice for you if you seriously want to go ‘green’ and also save a lot of money on your electricity bills. The best thing about solar technology is that it can be realized with even the simplest of means. However, building solar panels at home calls for some degree of familiarity with the subject. A step-by-step guide that clearly walks you through all the necessary steps, can prove to be really useful in this regard. Installing a solar energy panel at home is one of the best decisions you will ever take. Not only will you be happy to watch your energy costs go down radically, but will also be glad to know that you are doing your bit for the environment, and ensuring a greener tomorrow for your children.
