One of the most beautiful choices of flooring today is hardwood. After all, wood is beautiful, but it is also very durable, making it a great flooring choice. Hardwood floors look great in the dining room, family room, and even in your living room. If you want to have the warm and beautiful look that hardwood floors can provide, you may want to install this type of flooring into your home. If you have no experience, you may want to have a professional do the job. However, if you have a bit of experience, some time, and the right power tools, then you can install the hardwood floors in your home on your own.

The very first thing that you need to do if you are going to install the hardwood flooring on your own is to make sure that you have a good base for the flooring to go on. It needs to be clean, level, and smooth. If the base is not already this way, you may need to take some time to prepare it before you actually install the hardwood floors.

Once the base is all ready, then you can get to the installation process for the hardwood flooring. It is first a good idea to stack up the wood flooring in the home before you install it. This way the wood is able to get used to the level of humidity within your home before you put it down.

When installing the wood flooring, make sure that you go perpendicular to the joists of the floor. You will want to cover your subfloor first with asphalt felt first so that there is protection against moisture and so that there are no squeaks in your flooring as well. Once you are going on to actually put down the hardwood flooring, it’s a great idea to lay out the boards first staggering them so that too many end joints don’t end up near each others. You’ll have to cut the boards as well, for which you’ll need a good power miter saw or a radial arm saw.

Along the way as you are adding in new rows of flooring, you will want to tap in the planks with a good mallet to help tighten up the rows so you don’t end up having gaps between the rows of your hardwood flooring. After doing the first couple of rows, it can be very helpful to use a flooring nailer as well. Just be careful with this tool, since it can damage the flooring if you don’t use it right.

It is not too difficult to install your own hardwood flooring if you have a bit of instruction, plenty of time, and of course the right power tools to help you out. Keep these tips in mind along the way. Then, when you are finished, sit back and enjoy the beauty of your new hardwood floors.
