Many homeowners use a lot of water outside in the spring and summer months. We wash cars, water lawns, fill up swimming pools, water flowers, and plant vegetable gardens. We might wash windows and siding just to spruce things up a little. We might put in a fountain or a fish pond to add a little interest to the yard. All of these require water use and sometimes a lot of it and often. If we are lucky we get enough rainfall to water the lawn and plants, but the other things must have the water furnished by us.

When we water plants near the foundation of the home, you really must be careful to not over saturate the ground. Water that stands close to the foundation and stays wet for long periods of time can cause serious structural damage when it is present consistently. If your landscaping is done properly and the water runs away from the home, standard watering should not be a problem. Only when the landscaping allows water to puddle around the foundational structure will cracks and leaks develop. This can eventually allow water into your basement or crawlspace and it can cause the home to sink wherever the water is standing a lot.

You also need to make sure that swimming pools, ponds, or fountains do not have any leaks. The chemicals that are in the treated water of these things can seep into the ground and damage the lawn or other plants. Make sure these things are checked frequently so that leaks can be repaired in a timely manner. If you are not able to repair any leaking on your own, then you should call in a repair person to take care of it.

Not only is how we use water outside important to the health of our home, it is also important for conservation. We will sometimes turn on an outside hose and let it run and run while we go about doing things and not pay that much attention to how much water we are wasting unnecessarily. Always use a sprayer attachment that shuts off unless you are squeezing it. This can save gallons and gallons of water that would have been poured out on the ground for no reason at all. It is perfectly alright to use water for what we need it for, just make sure that you are using it wisely so we will be able to continue to have an adequate supply for ourselves and the next generations in the years to come.
