The quest for better crops has given way to the advancements in crop growing. In the desire to grow “better” crops, farmers and scientists have resorted to artificial and chemical substances to achieve their objective. At the onset, this seemed to be working great for most people. The result was that the crops harvested seemed to be of better quality. The fruits and leaves seemed to grow bigger, better, greener, much more colorful and looked more robust. However, the downside is, when people take these food in, they are unknowingly consuming amounts of the chemical and artificial substances used in these fertilizers, pesticides and additives.

As a result, in spite of the efforts of most people eat healthy by consuming more fruits and vegetables, they are also unconsciously consuming large quantities of these harmful chemicals. This must be one of the reasons why in spite of their seemingly “healthy” diet, a lot of people are still getting sick. In the end, it still boils down to what we are putting in our bodies. Even just by being around plants or crops that are treated with chemicals is harmful enough because certain amounts of these substances when sprayed onto the plants gets suspended in the air that we breathe. As such, these fertilizers and additives pollute the air as well.

Therefore, doing organic farming does not only our diets good but the environment as well. Through studies over the years, it has been found that the chemicals used in these chemical laden additives are actually harmful to our bodies. For instance, chemical fertilizers and pesticides such as malathion are known to contain contain chemicals that can affect behavior and brain development in children.
One more alarming fact is that different forms of cancers such as leukemia, brain cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer are linked back to having been exposed too much to these substances.

These startling truths have brought on a realization to most people that we should go back to the basics, go back to our roots when it comes to farming and many other things. The truth is, the price of the abuses of progress seems to be too much for our health and environment and is not worth it in the long run.
Organic gardening and organic farming are just some of the answers to this problem. Organic and whole food are essential parts of the solution to leading a healthy lifestyle. We can all do our share by starting in our own backyards.

Initially available through organic farms, organic produce is now widely available in the market today. However, one cannot be sure of the authenticity of these claims. That is why a lot of people have turned to organic farming to make sure that they are indeed getting chemical and preservative free food. It is only when you plant and take care of your own crops are you truly sure that your vegetables and fruits are genuinely organic.

While it is true that it may take a lot to do organic farming but the results to your health and environment are going to be so much worth all the effort.
