As many people discover the numerous benefits of wood floor restoration, there is a need for professional advice or alternatively to hire a professional company to do the job. Most people who decide to choose the wood floor restoration route do so because of the promise of beauty and the warmth of a wood floor. However there are also health benefits to having your wooden floors restored as carpets host a range of unhealthy dirt especially dust mites which trigger debilitating allergic reactions in many people. Wood floor restoration London has been trendy now for many years and throughout many parts of the UK and Ireland people have caught the trend. Some wood floor restoration experts have put together these tips to help you do the job correctly if you choose not to hire a professional company.

1. Planning the job:
Firstly you need to consider what type of wood you are planning to restore. If it is either a parquet or pine wood floor these are the two types that need extra special attention. If it is a pine floor they can seem very flat but without the right equipment you will end of with a dip in the centre of each floor board. For parquet you will need a specialist sander machine.

2. What to be aware of:
The most common mistake made by people new to wood floor restoration is when they are sanding the floors they leave the machine in one place for too long. Remember it is much better to move around then to risk this damaging mistake. Floor sanding machines are powerful and will eat up your floor very quickly so this is something to be avoided at all costs. So choose the right machine for the job and you should expect to hire a dustless floor sanding machine, as they are almost dust free as they have an inbuilt dust collection unit as part of the design.

3. What you will need beforehand:
Regardless of this you will still need to buy disposable facemasks for the work. When hiring the sanding machines you will need two different machines as one is for the main parts of the floor and the other is for the edges and also the stairs if they are included in the job. When choosing sandpaper be aware that the more stages of different textures of sandpaper the better the final look will be. Quality professional floor sanding companies will use seven different types. If you do not wish to go to this extent you can work with four which are necessary. These are 24 grit which is very coarse, 40 grit which is a medium texture, 80 grit which is medium to fine, and finally 120 grit which is a fine sandpaper.

4. Preparing for the job
Before starting you will need to nail punch down all nail heads to one eighth of an inch below the floor boards. If you do not do this properly you will have your sandpaper destroyed by them. Another part of the preparation is to fill any gaps in the floor boards. This can be done by using a solvent based resin for smaller gaps or imperfections. For the bigger ones you will need to insert narrow fillets.

5. Using the floor sanding machine
Now you are ready to use the machine with the 24 grit paper, but remember to take it easy and get yourself attuned to the machine. It is a bit like riding a bike, a horse or driving a motorbike or car, you should be in command but feel one with the machine. The most important thing is to acclimatise yourself and not to get stuck in one place, so prepare yourself to turn around gently when you reach the other side of the room. The same applies as you change and go through the various sandpaper types. When you have used all of them you should hoover the floor thoroughly and then leave it settle for a few hours before repeating. Also go with the grain not against it when sanding.

6. Finishing the restoration of your wooden floor
After the sanding has reached a state of perfection you should apply three coats of a high traffic lacquer, ideally a high quality environmentally friendly product. It is worth the investment as when the job is done correctly is should increase the value of your property, apart from being beautiful to look at. Depending on the finish you wish to achieve you can choose from matt, satin or gloss. For staining your wood floor there is a great choice of colours which can be right through from light oak to a deep rich mahogany.
