Surrogate Burglarized By Police?

Last month it was reported in www.cleveland.com by Lisa Cornwell of the Associated Press that two police chiefs from Ohio and the son of a local mayor were arraigned on several burglary charges.
Not only was this a rare case of prominent local individuals and chiefs of police being accused of criminal activity, but it was national news because their target was the surrogate mother for famous actors Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, the former known for his many movie roles including the 1980s classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. His wife is best known as Carrie from the hit TV show ‘Sex in the City.’
According to special prosecutor T. Shawn Hervey, the men conspired to take items from Michelle Ross’ eastern Ohio home to sell to paparazzi.
Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter was charged with two counts of burglary and Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack was charged with two counts of complicity to burglary and one count of complicity to receiving stolen property. The third man, Bruce Callarik, son of Bridgeport Mayor John Callarik, was also arraigned. All three men pleaded not guilty.
Bridgeport’s village solicitor, Richard Myser, was quick to state that Dojack was still the official police chief, but a week later Dojack was suspended and put on paid leave by his village council until the results of the trial are in.
Carpenter is alleged to have entered Ross’ home and removed items that would identify her as the surrogate mother. The presence or lack of a home alarm system or a wireless home security system wasn’t noted, but evidently some form of local security system helped to reveal the crimes. Sometimes the best burglar alarms are neighbors.
Carpenter and Dojack then attempted to sell the items to paparazzi with help from Bruce Callarik
“It is extremely troubling that the persons sworn to uphold the law and protect the public are now charged with violating those oaths,” said T. Shawn Hervey.
Hervey also expressed lament for a troubling society “so celebrity crazed that a market exists and tens of thousands of dollars are exchanged for pictures and stories of celebrity scandal.”
The surrogate mother gave birth to twins on June 22nd.
In a number of interviews, Sarah Jessica Parker has described many other awful violations of Michelle Ross’ privacy. However, according to their publicist, she and Broderick “have complete faith in the legal system.”
