Tapestries have been around for many hundreds of years and there are a number of very famous examples, but perhaps the most famous of all is the Bayeux Tapestry. What are tapestries and why are they still so popular?

Basically, tapestries are a form of textile art and are usually extremely decorative. If there were such things in days gone by, tapestries may well have been the equivalent of today’s pop culture with tapestries displaying famous events, battles and of high profile people of the day. I am sure those in the historical world, would likely berate me for such a comparison but it’s a cool thought.

Tapestries may not yet be sold in every other shop and store on the high street but they have certainly been making a popular recovery and are no longer confined to being pictures in history books or in display cabinets in museums. The success of the tapestry is likely due mainly to its portable nature and the fact that it can be rolled and easily transported to another location or shipped with relative easy across the world.

However, the renewed success of tapestries is largely due to something very modern, technology. Special computerised methods are able to bring ancient work back to life with the pressing of a few buttons. Just as we have seen visual effects in movies improve with state of the art equipment and the move into the third dimension, so to with the tapestry.

“The Tournament” displays a very dramatic and action packed scene from medieval times, of knights and jousting tournaments and the new technology brilliantly reincarnates the atmosphere of the day with its striking colours and authenticity. As you gaze at the images, and use your imagination, the sounds, smells and tensions of the day can almost be touched!

If, as mentioned earlier, tapestry shops and stores are yet to spring up everywhere on your local high street, where can you get hold of tapestries if you are interested in acquiring some for your home or even your business establishment? Well there are stores you can visit physically but many more tapestry businesses operate online, which really is the new high street.

These stores often stock all the well known historical tapestries in different sizes and often as prints too, as well as other gift ideas and merchandise such as cushions and other adornments. Most online stores of this nature have easy to order systems and many can ship worldwide.
