The Benefits Of Indoor Gardening

Growell Hydroponics – http://www.growell.co.uk

Gardening is one of the worlds favourite hobbies, yet in many countries it is considered a summer passtime only thanks to the weather. Everyone seems to know somebody who grows their own fruit and veg in the summer months, but how many of us know someone who grows their own food all year round? This is surprising, especially given the ever increasing cost of food and our burgeoning sensitivity to the environmental impact of flying in fruit and veg from all corners of the globe.

The solution is simple, instead of dusting off your greenhouse just once a year, why not invest in an indoor garden and keep the crops coming all year round. There are plenty of food crops that will grow quite happily on a winter window ledge, or if you are a little more ambitious and have the space then artificial lighting and indoor hydroponic growing systems allow you to grow literally any plant you can think of! If you can replicate the natural environment of the plant then it will grow, it really is as simple as that!

You can have a constant and plentiful supply of summer fruit and veg such as tomatoes, chillis, cucumbers, lettuce, the list goes on! The food is as fresh as possible and you will be safe in the knowledge that no horrible pesticides have been used and no damage has been done to the environment.
It’s not as difficult as it sounds. If you can grow a tomato plant in your greenhouse then you can grow one indoors, you can even use the same grow bags and canes if you like, the principle is exactly the same. Of course there are more hi-tech growing systems available if you want to experiment, but you can become self sufficient for fruit and veg just using simple pots and compost if you like!

The real key to an indoor garden is getting the light and environment right. To do this you will need to have an area of your house that you can section of for use as a growing chamber. There are many commercially available “grow tents” that will help you do this, but simple plastic sheeting will suffice. You will need a light source, again many grow lights are available ranging from the cheap and cheerful to the super hi-tech, but you will need to ensure that the light you are using is sufficiently powerful and of the right colour spectrum. A simple household bulb will not suffice here unfortunately! You will also need to create air exchange within your grow room to remove stale air and supply fresh CO2 rich air to your plants, a simple bathroom extractor fan will do the job along with some ventilation holes in your growing chamber.

Breaking all this down into it’s simplest form, all you will need is a small amount of equipment, some space to grow and some green fingers before you can keep your favourite hobby going all year round and enjoy super fresh fruit and veg all year round. Simple!
