Most people would think that the greatest horror of having a house fire is when someone does not survive and that is true, of course. What is thought about a little less is the fact that even after the fire is out and everyone survives, there are still plenty of horrors left to be dealt with. When a family has their home burned to the ground or even if it is just badly damaged, survival is not always enough to erase the scars that are left behind. The fears and uncertainty remain for long afterward and sometimes they never go away.

Even if you move into a completely new home or when your old one that caught fire has been repaired, there will many a lot of issues to be deal with. If a family member was scarred or injured in some way, that will always be a part of them and they will never forget. Then there is the aspect of whether or not one particular member of the family might have been responsible for the fire. Even when they are accidental blame is easy to put on the one that was careless even when you love them. Something like this can make emotions run high and forgiveness might be hard to come by especially when someone is injured.

The ones that might be affected the most with long term issues are children. They can have fears that stay with them for years or for always. They might have recurring nightmares or become afraid of ever being near a fire of any kind. It is not unheard of for some family members to even need some type of counseling after a tragedy like a house fire. It is important to watch children closely after an event like this to see if they are showing signs of trauma in any way, It might be good for the parents to talk with someone to know what to look for or just know how to calm a child the gets upset about what happened.

The main thing after a home fire is to make sure that the home you are in now is well equipped to alert you to any new fire threat. Make sure you have enough smoke detectors in place to alert everyone in the home and that they are always in working condition with good batteries or hard wired into the home or a monitoring system. Keep a fire extinguisher on every floor of the home including the garage, Keep the fire department phone number where it is visible and make sure everyone knows how to call 911 that is old. Practice escape plans and have a meeting place when everyone is out of the house. A house fire is something you never want to have to go through once, let a lone twice.
