The sofa is an essential piece of furniture that nearly every modern house around the world contains. Ask yourself – when was the last time that you visited a housed that didn’t have a sofa? Maybe you can’t even remember!
It originated in the time of the Renaissance period and back then they were quite simple, consisting of just of a wooden framework upholstered with leather. You’ll struggle to find one like that these days though. Nowadays they are much more comfortable and luxurious. They come with padding and spring cushions and, in addition to being upholstered in leather, a variety of other textiles can also be chosen from, such as linen, rayon, or even cotton.
Yes, the sofa has evolved greatly, so much so that there are now sub-categories of them. There is the British loveseat, which seats two people. There is the settee, which can typically accommodates three people, though settees for five can be found. There is the divan, which is has just a partial back rest, or even no back rest at all.
There is the chaise lounge, which one arm rested sofa that is longer than normal. There is the canape, which is, like the settee, a three seater but which places appearance over comfort. There is the ottoman, which is often mistakenly not called a sofa at all due to its lack of a back rest and arm rests.
A fairly modern twist on the traditional sofa is sectional sofas. These are made up of two or three small sections that be put together to form a complete sofa or kept apart to be used as independent ones.
It can seem like the possible combinations available are endless. You could buy a plush sofa with leather upholstery and spring cushions, a simple sofa made of foam and upholstered with linen, or anything inbetween.
Prices can get expensive at the top end but even on a tight budget you will still have thousands of options available to you. Most stores allow you to pay in installments too so your dream sofa might still be within reach, even if you’re that financially well off right now.
Always be sure to look around for a bargain though as prices can vary significanyly from store to store. Many stores have sales taking place around holiday times and for many this is the ideal time to make a purchase.
Ultimately though, despite all of the unique characteristics that you can find in sofas, the number one consideration for most people is comfort when sitting on it. No-one could really be pleased with a sofa that was anything but comfortable!
