There is nothing more important than lighting when it comes to accenting, or even creating, an interior design style. Lighting can make or break a room just by using the wrong bulb in a lamp, let alone the style of the lamp.

Lamps come in three popular sizes. Floor lamps are generally taller and very slim. These are often located behind chairs or in corners of a room. Table lamps are usually on an accent or coffee table and are medium in height, and desk lamps are exactly what they say they are: a small lamp to provide extra light to a desk surface.

The actual design of the lamp may be the interior design boost that you need in a room. You might consider purchasing one for the lamp shade in particular. The remarkable versatility of lamps makes them one of the most sought-after additions to any room. They can add light to a dark corner, shed light on a collection of vintage knick knacks, or even just be a simple light that does the job it needs to do – creating a more utilitarian look to a room.

Sconces, often known as wall lights, usually highlight hanging works of art – or are the actual work of art. A wall sconce is hung directly on the wall, not from the ceiling or using a stand on the floor, and is often wired directly to a socket so there is no electrical cord to be seen. Made of many materials including glass and metals, they come in a variety of forms from modern organic to floral, or even simple boxes or orbs. They can easily complement any decor through out the house and are particularly nice in a dark hallway or for just soft, ambient lighting.

Pendant lighting has become more popular, particularly in small areas to accent a fine piece of furniture or even over a cooking area or small table. Pendant lights hang from the ceiling, usually by a small base with at least a twelve-inch drop to a globe of some form. Often seen as simple orbs or perhaps flowers, the globes are usually glass, either translucent or opaque to soften the lighting, but there are some that are clear that bring a cleaner look to a room. Pendants are often coloured, which adds to the softness of the lighting, bringing out specific interior design qualities that many wish to make more distinct.

These are by far not the extent of lighting options that add to interior design of a home, but they are the most common. There are also traditional and modern chandeliers that grace formal dining rooms or foyers, and of course out door lighting. With more people creating outdoor dining area, outdoor lighting has far outgrown the simple bulb or carriage lantern style; bringing elegance to any entertaining experience in similar, yet more durable forms that continue the indoor design to the outside. Lighting is another way to create moods and add drama to any room or patio within a few minutes.
