It is probably true that not much has shocked the residents in Georgia as much as the recent rain storms that have just kept on coming in the late Summer of 2009. In 2008 they were suffering some of the worst droughts they have had since who knows when and things were really getting desperate. Famous water sources like Lake Lanier and other waterways were all but drying up. Lake Lanier is a big tourist attraction and many local residents depend on it for their warm weather enjoyment. With the recent downpours the levels of Georgia waterways are recovering, but leaving some of the residents flooded out of their homes.
It is no doubt some crazy weather patterns that are taking place. The mid-west had their turn not long ago and now it seems the south is having theirs. It is hard to predict what weather will happen where anymore. Fires raging out of control in the west and flooding in other places. Homeowners just never know what to expect anymore. Fire can burn you out completely, but water is just as bad when it floods. It can wipe out everything too.
The thing about heavy rainfall that comes from smaller weather systems one after the other is that it can take a while for the waterways to build up enough to go over their banks. When this does happen, homes can be flooded on the lower levels fairly easily and sometimes it gets deeper than that. A family can losr some of their things and suffer some water damage or they can be effected drastically. The best they can hope for is that the water will not be deep and that it recedes quickly. The longer it stays in the home, the worse the damage will be even if it is only a foot or two.
It does not take long, especially in the warm weather months, for mold to set in. This is entirely different from just the water. When it is just water, a lot of times things can be washed and cleaned up and be usable again. Sometimes not. When mold begins to grow in the home, it gets under the floors, in the walls, the insulation, drywall, and it begins to spread and eat anything that makes a food source for it.
Tragically, even when the water is gone in a few days, the mold can already be present and it can totally devastate the home. Sometimes there can be parts of the home torn out and replaced, but sometimes it is a total loss when it costs more to repair than the home is worth. A water damage company can only do so much sometimes, but the sooner they can get in and estimate the damage, the better.
