People have a tendency to hold on to things because it’s in their nature. Mementos and souvenirs from special occasions that happened decades ago are still packed up in boxes in the garage. Name the occasion and someone is bound to have a souvenir from it: graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, and so forth. It is through this habit of holding on to things that homes get filled to the brim.

If you have gotten so sick of having too much stuff that you’ve finally decided to donate your unused belongings or throw them out, then congratulations are in order. You are going to reclaim your space and not let your belongings dictate how your home will feel like to you. Letting go of certain items can actually conjure up different emotions in people. From relief to liberation to happiness, items obtained from negative situations can make you feel joyous and free.

So where do you begin? Begin by taking out all of those unused items and place them in a big room, such as a garage or spare room, so that you can sort through and organize them. The general rule about picking and choosing which items get to go is if you haven’t used it for about 12 to 15 months, then it needs to go.

For any clothing that has been tucked away for long periods of time, they need to go. If you have a scarf that has been hanging in your closet for more than a year and you keep swearing up and down that you will find a use for it one day, then that needs to go as well. Now, there is an exception to the clothing rule because of the different seasons. Winter and summer clothes get stored away during certain seasons obviously so take that into account.

Now, figurines and other decorations need to be thrown out if you haven’t used them in a year. Again, take into account special holiday decorations. That vase that you can’t seem to match up with any of your other decorations and has therefore been sitting in a box for five years needs to go because there is a very good chance it will never get paired up with anything again.

With mementos such as wedding cards, yearbooks and tassels, and other really important items, those can stay in an airtight plastic container – so it does not develop mold.

Donating is always best because your “trash” could be another person’s “treasure”. Many people, including non-profits and other organizations, could put to use what you throw out. Plus, donating means you aren’t contributing some more junk into the already filled-up landfills.
