When someone decides to build a brand new home from the ground up, it can be a very exciting and a very tiring experience. There are so many decisions to be made concerning every little detail from the blue print to moving in. It can also be a very costly project and sticking to a budget can be difficult when you make changes a long the way. It is easy to spend more on some things and then try to make up the costs in other areas. Some places that you might try to make up some cash and save a little are with the things that will not be seen once they are covered up. Just remember that the products and materials you use in your home that can help to protect it from mold and water damage are not the things that should be scrimped on.

One of those things is the type of drywall you use. You might think that once drywall is painted, what will it matter if you use the less expensive stuff. As long as you use green board for your bathrooms, it will be fine right? Not necessarily. Green board is not meant to be used for things like applying tile too because it is a wet application. Even thought the green paper that that makes green board green is water resistant, it is not water proof. Green board is used on walls where there might be moisture because it helps to prevent water from penetrating, but this might not even be good enough.

Of course, you want to prevent water damage to your drywall especially in places where water is common like a bathroom or perhaps in a kitchen where it can be hot and steamy sometimes. Using green board will not guarantee that it will not get wet and it certainly does not mean that mold can not develop. This is one of the biggest concerns for any homeowner is making sure you keep the mold out. This will not require just any old drywall, you will need to best available to reduce the risk as much as possible.

There is mold resistant drywall available out there. While green board is simply a water resistant paper over the standard gypsum that is also used in regular drywall, mold resistant drywall has a moisture resistant fiberglass material inside. Be sure and discuss this drywall with your builder before you allow any to be purchased or put up. Not only is water and mold resistant drywall important, there are many other products available that will help prevent mold from growing so easily in your new home. When it comes to building a better home, sometimes the things that you do not really see are some of the most important.
