The earth’s supply of fossil fuels is dwindling, and this scarcity is only going to drive the cost of those fuels, and thus the cost of our electricity bills, up. It is unclear even to the experts exactly how long our reserves of oil and other natural resources will last, but estimates place it as soon as a few decades, which means it could be within our lifetimes.

Reducing our dependence on fossil fuels has two advantages:
- We emit fewer polluting greenhouse gases.
- We rely less on fossil fuels and help the earth’s supply last longer

Recent developments in the technology of renewable energy have made it simple enough for you to build your own wind turbine. Wind power for the home is now realistic and feasible. You can get a practical amount of power out of a home wind turbine. Wind power is environmentally clean, and apart from the greenhouse gases emitted to produce the components, does not produce any further pollution. It’s also renewable as it is harnessing the power of nature, did you know that the total amount of wind power that can be potentially generated is greater than five times the total energy demand of the planet? There will never be a shortage of wind power.

Wind power for the home also does not require much maintenance. Once your wind turbine is set up and running, if you have constructed it well it will run for a long time, generating you power every time the wind blows, and all for the small sum of less than $300 that it would take you to construct and install a wind turbine.

Countries like Denmark use wind power extensively, and it makes up approximately 20% of the nation’s energy production. Whilst wind power is a good and practical addition to your home made power system, it cannot be solely relied upon as winds are variable and might not always be blowing. So at best you should aim to use home wind power to supplement, not replace your current power consumption. You can even use the wind turbines to charge up batteries when the wind is blowing and draw on the stored electricity when you need it.

The key to making your own DIY wind turbine is the right knowledge. Purchase a good guide to home renewable energy and it should give you all the information you need, a component list and a blueprint to setting the wind turbine up. The average wind speed where you live is also important, it has to be high enough (check the guide you’ve bought for how much wind you need) and you can check this on Google. Once you’ve got all the knowledge and know-how in place, just assemble and install the turbine as instructed, and start saving money.

With prices of components and know-how developing all the time, wind power for the home is now cost-effective and feasible. Home wind turbines are a great way to save on energy bills and take a step towards greener living.
