Although woodworking is a fun hobby, it can also be a dangerous one if the proper precautions are not taken. Luckily the precautions are only a few simple and basic guidelines that are mostly common sense.

Safety Equipment:

The most important rule to remember is to wear the right safety equipment when woodworking. Of these, the most valuable is safety glasses. Safety glasses should be worn at all times when working in the wood shop, and should only be taken off when leaving the shop. Equipment that you should also have on hand is safety gloves and hearing protection when working with loud and noisy tools.

Appropriate Clothing:

Although it may sound strange, it’s important to dress appropriately for when you are working on the wood shop. Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothes as they can easily become entangled in equipment and be a safety hazard. Also remember to take note of any hanging jewelry that might get in the way or get tangled. Wear clothes that are well fitted.

Intoxicating Substances:

It may seem common sense to most people that alcohol and power tools don’t mix, but it bears repeating that it is very dangerous to be intoxicated while working in the wood shop. Most accidents happen through negligence, and negligence is almost inevitable when you are working while intoxicated.

Changing Parts:

Whenever you need to change the parts or blades of a power tool, it is very important to remember to disconnect the power first before doing so. Make doubly sure that the machine is turned off by disconnecting it and not just turning off the switch. Switches can malfunction and accidents can happen, resulting in a loss of fingers or worse if the machine should accidentally turn on. One way to help ensure this is to use only one power cord for all your tools, so that you are forced to disconnect them each time from the socket before you can use another tool. This will help you to remember if a tool is on or not.

Sharp Blades:

It’s very important that you make sure your blades and cutting tools are sharp. Dull instruments can be dangerous because there is a greater chance that they will bounce off or kick back off the wood. Sharp equipment also produces much better results. Also check your wood to make sure there are no pieces of metal in it that can damage your blade. This is another hazard that can cause blades to kick back and cause injury.

Stay Away From The Blades:

When working with table saws, do not put your hands near the blades while it is moving or even while it is off. Because switches can malfunction, it is easily possible for the saw to switch on accidentally and cause you serious injury. Make sure it is unplugged first before moving your hands near it or before cut-offs from the table near the blade. Safety is an important and essential feature of working with wood.
